Why the biological engine of human evolution has stalled in the West
In short: We often imagine humanity as a species in constant flux, but for those in developed nations, the traditional mechanics of natural selection have largely ceased. While our ancestors adapted to harsh environments over millennia, modern life has fundamentally decoupled our survival from our genetic traits.
Professor Steve Jones argues that while human evolution occurred over millions of years from ape-like ancestors, it also happened rapidly over just a few millennia in response to specific environmental shifts. This process relies on natural selection—genetic changes driven by differences in survival and reproduction. However, Jones suggests that in the developed world, these primary drivers have effectively vanished for the time being.
The reason lies in our current environment. Because modern society provides protections against the traditional threats of nature, the 'survival' part of the equation is no longer tied to specific genetic advantages. When differences in survival and reproduction are neutralized by technology and social structures, the ancestral engine of natural selection goes quiet. This suggests that while we aren't static, the specific biological path our species took for hundreds of thousands of years has hit a plateau.
This shift marks a transition from 'biological' evolution to other forms of change. Jones notes that historical visions of the future, such as Thomas More’s 1516 work "Utopia," focused on social and intellectual transformations—like treating crime as a medical issue or changing societal organization. In contrast, modern science fiction often defaults to physical mutation or biological change (such as 'blobby mutant creatures'). Yet, Jones observes that these sci-fi visions of biological evolution often mirror our current dystopian realities of war and tribalism, suggesting that while our biology may be paused, our social complexities remain constant.
