Why Bach’s solo violin sonatas remain a monumental challenge for modern performers
In short: Violinist Johnny Gandelsman performs J.S. Bach’s Sonata No. 2 in A minor at The Met Cloisters. This video captures a residency where Gandelsman explores the personal and joyful nature of Bach’s compositions within the unique acoustics of the Fuentidueña Chapel.
In May 2023, Johnny Gandelsman completed a weeklong residency at The Met Cloisters, where he performed Bach’s complete set of six sonatas and partitas for solo violin. He also presented new arrangements of the composer’s six cello suites. Gandelsman interprets these works as deeply intimate and celebratory, blending his own folk-influenced musical perspective with the technical demands of the Baroque repertoire.
The performance took place over four nights inside the Fuentidueña Chapel, a historic space that provides a distinct setting for these complex compositions. The event was supported by a dedicated concert fund established by Grace Jarcho Ross and Daniel G. Ross.
