Why Bach’s solo violin sonatas remain a monumental challenge for modern performers

J.S. Bach: Violin Sonata No. 3 in C major (Johnny Gandelsman) | MetLiveArts · 21:29 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: Violinist Johnny Gandelsman performs Bach’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in the Fuentidueña Chapel at The Met Cloisters. This recording captures a residency where Gandelsman explores the personal and joyful nature of these complex compositions, blending his own folk-inspired musical perspective with the traditional demands of the repertoire.

In May 2023, Gandelsman spent a week at The Met Cloisters to interpret Bach’s complete collection of six sonatas and partitas for solo violin, alongside new arrangements of the six cello suites. The four-night performance series took place within the Fuentidueña Chapel, a setting chosen to highlight the intimate and expressive qualities of the music.

Gandelsman views these works as deeply personal, and his approach incorporates a distinct folk-rooted influence. The project was supported by a dedicated concert fund established by Grace Jarcho Ross and Daniel G. Ross.
