Food as a portal into the ancestral histories of humankind
In short: Artist Jon Gray explores how culinary traditions serve as bridges between cultures. This residency highlights how food connects disparate people and honors historical narratives through community-based art and nourishment.
As co-founder of Ghetto Gastro, Jon Gray uses the Bronx's international cuisine to explore global traditions, specifically those of the African diaspora. His work emphasizes 'block-to-block' cultural shifts, aiming to establish the borough as a culinary destination while mentoring young entrepreneurs.
During his 2020–2022 residency with The Met’s Civic Practice Partnership, Gray bridged high art and community action. He co-published Black Power Kitchen—a cookbook and manifesto on rebellion and nourishment—and collaborated with La Morada, a family restaurant turned soup kitchen, to host food-sharing events in the South Bronx.
