In short: Born into wealth, Kim Dong-in rejected the didactic, message-driven literature of his peers to pursue pure aestheticism. His career, marked by naturalist masterpieces and a controversial descent into collaboration, remains a complex legacy of modern Korean letters, defined by a lifelong war against the enlightenment movement of his time.

Kim Dong-in was a central figure in the evolution of modern Korean literature, emerging as a primary advocate for art-for-art's-sake. In 1919, he co-founded the journal Creation, which served as a direct opposition to the nationalistic, didactic literature promoted by Yi Gwangsu. Kim’s early work, such as the 1921 story Potato, introduced a stark realism and deterministic viewpoint that challenged traditional morality. By focusing on characters who degenerate under economic pressure, Kim sought to establish the autonomy of literature, distancing it from the ideological demands of the Proletarian Movement.

The trajectory of Kim’s life was as dramatic as his fiction. After squandering a significant inheritance, his financial collapse in 1930 led to depression and drug abuse, forcing him to abandon his purist stance for popular serial novels. His reputation suffered a severe blow in 1939 when he participated in a Japanese-sponsored visit to Manchuria, an act of collaboration that remains a stain on his legacy. Ironically, he was later imprisoned by the Japanese in 1942 for lese-majesty against the Emperor, and after liberation, he authored works that sharply critiqued fellow writers who had collaborated with the occupation.

Kim’s influence persists through his aestheticist fiction, such as Sonata Appassionato and Gwanghwasa Temple, which explore the obsession of artists pursuing perfection. Despite his personal contradictions and the political turmoil of his era, his commitment to succinct prose and objective perspective left a lasting mark. In 1955, the Dong-in Literary Award was established to honor his contributions, and many of his stories have been adapted into films, cementing his status as a foundational, if polarizing, master of Korean prose.
