Why a mosquito's flight and a speeding car share one property
In short: Every moving object, from a subatomic particle to a massive spacecraft, possesses kinetic energy. But this isn't just about speed; it is a complex interplay of mass and motion that changes fundamentally as objects approach the limits of the universe.
Kinetic energy is defined as the energy an object or particle possesses due to its motion. While we often think of movement in simple straight lines, known as translation, kinetic energy also accounts for rotation about an axis and vibration. The total kinetic energy of any system is simply the sum of all these different types of motion combined.
For most everyday objects, translational kinetic energy is calculated using the formula 1/2mv², where 'm' is mass and 'v' is velocity. This means that doubling an object's speed doesn't just double its energy—it quadruples it because the velocity is squared. To put this in perspective, a two-kilogram mass moving at one metre per second possesses exactly one joule of energy.
However, classical physics reaches a breaking point at extreme speeds. When particles approach the speed of light (3 × 10⁸ metres per second), their mass increases, and the standard formula yields values that are too small. In these relativistic conditions, kinetic energy is instead calculated by the increase in the particle's mass over its rest mass multiplied by the square of the speed of light.
Scientists use different scales to measure these energies depending on the context. While the joule is the standard unit in the metre-kilogram-second system, the erg (10⁻⁷ joule) describes smaller movements like a mosquito in flight. For even tinier interactions at the atomic or subatomic scale, researchers utilize the electron volt.
