How one philosopher navigated the collapse of two worlds in Albania
In short: Lea Ypi grew up in the shadow of communism, only to witness its sudden dissolution. As a leading political theorist, she uses her own life as a lens to examine the meaning of freedom and dignity, bridging the gap between abstract academic philosophy and the lived reality of historical upheaval.
Born in 1979 in Tirana, Lea Ypi experienced the stark transition from a communist regime to a post-communist society. Her family, historically Muslim, was forced into atheism under state rule, while her paternal great-grandfather had served as a Prime Minister in the 1920s. This complex heritage, combined with her grandfather’s fifteen-year imprisonment by the communist government, shaped her early perspective on political structures and personal identity.
Ypi’s academic career took her from the Sapienza University of Rome to the European University Institute, where she completed her PhD in 2008. She currently holds a senior professorship at the London School of Economics. Her scholarly work is deeply rooted in normative political theory, with a particular focus on Kantian thought, Marxism, and the ethics of migration. She is widely recognized for her ability to synthesize rigorous political science with the intellectual history of the Balkans.
Her writing has garnered significant international acclaim. Her 2021 memoir, Free, explored her childhood during the end of history, while her 2025 work, Indignity, traces the concept of dignity through her grandmother’s life from the Ottoman collapse to the communist era. These books have established her as a prominent public intellectual, earning her recognition from publications like Prospect and El País. Beyond her memoirs, she has authored numerous academic texts on topics ranging from global justice to the nature of partisanship, cementing her role as a vital voice in contemporary political philosophy.
