How a fictional Chihuahua’s quest for justice became a Hollywood political satire
In short: In the 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Elle Woods trades Harvard for Capitol Hill to fight animal testing. While the film was a commercial success, critics found the follow-up lacked the original's charm, leaving audiences to wonder if the blonde joke had finally worn thin.
Following her graduation from Harvard Law, Elle Woods discovers that her dog Bruiser’s mother is being used for cosmetic testing by a corporation represented by her own law firm. After being fired for her opposition, Elle heads to Washington, D.C. to champion 'Bruiser’s Bill.' Her journey through the halls of Congress is marked by skepticism, political maneuvering, and the realization that idealism often clashes with the harsh realities of legislative life.
The production of the film was an exercise in cinematic illusion. Although the narrative takes place in the nation's capital, the crew avoided filming on location. Instead, they utilized government buildings in Springfield, Illinois, and Salt Lake City, Utah, to stand in for Washington. To capture the iconic skyline, the production team constructed detailed scale models rather than relying on actual aerial footage of the city.
Upon its release on July 2, 2003, the film performed well financially, grossing approximately $125 million worldwide. Despite this, critical reception was lukewarm. Reviewers on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic noted that the sequel struggled to recapture the ditsy appeal of its predecessor. Entertainment Weekly even included it on a 2006 list of the worst sequels ever produced, highlighting the gap between the studio's expectations and the public's reaction.
The legacy of the franchise continues to evolve. While the second film concluded with a wink toward a potential presidential run for Elle, the series itself has seen various shifts, including a direct-to-video spin-off in 2009 and ongoing discussions regarding a third installment. Though a planned 2020 release for a third film did not materialize, the project remains in development with new writers attached to craft a fresh script.
