The solitary survival of a wasp queen's new empire
In short: Watch how a single survivor navigates the high-stakes transition from hibernation to colony founder. This video explores the grueling year-long cycle of a wasp queen establishing her reign.
After mating in late autumn and enduring a winter hibernation, a lone wasp queen emerges in the spring to begin her life as a foundress. She is often the sole survivor of her previous hive, tasked with the monumental responsibility of starting a new colony from scratch.
The narrative follows her annual cycle: founding the nest, hunting for food to nourish her brood, and defending the territory against intruders. It highlights the biological persistence required to transform a pile of firewood into a thriving social structure.
