The exiled priest who built the foundation for modern Italian Christian democracy
In short: Luigi Sturzo was a Catholic priest who became a titan of Italian politics, founding the Italian People's Party in 1919. Forced into two decades of exile by the rise of fascism, he spent his life navigating the complex intersection of faith, political power, and the struggle against totalitarianism.
Born in 1871, Luigi Sturzo was a Sicilian priest who bridged the gap between theology and practical governance. In 1919, he helped launch the Italian People's Party (PPI), a move that signaled a major shift in Vatican policy by ending the long-standing prohibition against Catholic participation in Italian national politics. The party quickly became a dominant force, holding enough influence that no government could form without its support between 1919 and 1922.
Sturzo’s staunch anti-fascism eventually made him a target of Benito Mussolini’s regime. As violence against Catholic organizations escalated, Sturzo resigned his leadership role in 1923 and was eventually forced into exile in 1924. He spent years in London and the United States, refusing repeated Vatican offers to return to Italy in exchange for silence on political matters. Even while abroad, he remained a vocal critic of fascism, writing hundreds of articles and collaborating with Allied intelligence agencies during World War II.
Returning to Italy in 1946, Sturzo found his influence diminished, yet he remained a significant intellectual figure. He founded the Luigi Sturzo Institute in 1951 to promote research in history, economics, and politics. In his final years, he was appointed a senator for life in 1953, a position he accepted after receiving a special dispensation from Pope Pius XII. Today, his legacy is marked by his ongoing cause for canonization, which began in 2002, recognizing him as a Servant of God.
