In short: Born in Helsinki in 1935, Märta Tikkanen emerged as a prominent Swedish-speaking Finnish author and educator. Beyond her academic achievements and roles in journalism, her work famously confronted societal taboos, including the provocative themes explored in her novel Manrape, which was adapted into a film in 1978.
Märta Eleonora Tikkanen, born to parents Gösta Cavonius and Margit Stadius, has navigated a multifaceted career that spans journalism, education, and literature. After graduating from the Svenska flicklyceet i Helsingfors in 1953, she pursued higher education at the University of Helsinki, earning a Master of Arts in 1958 and a Master of Philosophy in 1961. Transitioning into education, Tikkanen taught Swedish at Drumsö svenska samskola from 1961 to 1966. She later took on administrative leadership as the rector of the Helsinki-based Swedish Adult Education Centre, a position she held from 1972 to 1980. Tikkanen's personal life was marked by her marriage to the writer Henrik Tikkanen from 1963 until his death in 1984, following a previous marriage to Leif Ginman. Her literary impact reached a wide audience when her book Män kan inte våldtas—translated as Manrape—was adapted into a 1978 film directed by Jörn Donner. Her contributions to literature and culture have been widely recognized, earning her numerous accolades including the Nordic Women's Alternative Literature Prize in 1979 and the Swedish literary De Nios Grand Prize in 1999.
