How a museum director navigated a global recession without cutting a single program
In short: In January 2009, Thomas P. Campbell took the helm of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Facing the severe economic pressures of the 2008 recession, he faced a critical choice: scale back the institution or find a new way to engage the public.
When Thomas P. In early 2009, amidst worldwide economic instability, Campbell took charge as the ninth Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The 2008 recession brought significant fiscal setbacks to many cultural institutions, yet Campbell managed to maintain the museum's momentum. He notably avoided reducing gallery openings, public programs, or operating hours, focusing instead on a strategy of accessibility and narrative-driven scholarship.
His leadership was defined by expanding the museum's reach through both physical and digital means. During his tenure, the Met saw the opening of new galleries for the American Wing and the Islamic Art Department. He also embraced the digital age with the 'It's Time We Met' campaign, a Flickr-based initiative designed to involve visitors directly in the museum's visual story. This period also saw the launch of a TEDx program and a unique collaboration with the Whitney Museum's Breuer Building on Madison Avenue.
Campbell's approach was rooted in deep curatorial expertise. Before leading the institution, he spent fourteen years within the Met's Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, progressing from Assistant Curator to a leadership role. His background included organizing major exhibitions such as 'Tapestry in the Renaissance' in 2002 and 'Tapestry in the Baroque' in 2007. He also supervised the Antonio Ratti Textile Center, a global leader in textile studies housing 36,000 items. After resigning from the Met in 2017, he transitioned to directing the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 2018.
