Michael Dummett: The philosopher who decoded logic, voting systems, and the history of Tarot.

In short: Michael Dummett was a giant of 20th-century analytic philosophy, yet his intellectual curiosity spanned far beyond logic. From pioneering the study of realism to campaigning against racism and uncovering the true origins of Tarot cards, Dummett lived a life defined by rigorous inquiry and a commitment to social justice.

As the Wykeham Professor of Logic at Oxford until 1992, Dummett transformed our understanding of analytic philosophy. He was instrumental in reviving interest in Gottlob Frege, though he was deeply unsettled to discover that his hero held virulent anti-Semitic views. Dummett’s own work focused on the nature of truth, famously popularizing the debate between realism and anti-realism. He argued that these philosophical disputes were fundamentally about whether truth is something we discover—independent of our knowledge—or something that must be verifiable.

Dummett’s intellect was famously eclectic. He applied his logical precision to political science, devising the Quota Borda voting system and co-conjecturing the theorem later proved by Allan Gibbard and Mark Satterthwaite regarding strategic voting. His activism was equally intense; he was a dedicated campaigner for racial equality, even stalling his academic career to fight for civil rights. In his book On Immigration and Refugees, he advocated for open borders, arguing that opposition to migration was largely rooted in racism.

Perhaps most surprisingly, Dummett was a world-leading authority on the history of card games. His seminal work, The Game of Tarot, debunked the myth that Tarot cards were ancient mystical tools. Instead, he demonstrated that they were invented in 15th-century Italy as a trick-taking game. By analyzing historical records, he showed that the occult associations only emerged in the 18th century, long after the game had reached its international heyday.
