Beyond the mob: how Michael Imperioli built a career as a creative polymath
In short: Michael Imperioli is best known for his iconic portrayal of Christopher Moltisanti, but his artistic life extends far beyond the screen. From writing screenplays and directing features to fronting a rock band and practicing Buddhism, Imperioli has cultivated a diverse creative identity that defies the boundaries of traditional Hollywood stardom.
Born in Mount Vernon, New York, in 1966, Imperioli initially planned to pursue a medical degree at the State University of New York at Albany. However, a last-minute decision to follow his passion for performance led him to Manhattan, where he studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. His early career included a notable appearance in the 1990 film Goodfellas, but it was his work on the HBO series The Sopranos that defined his public profile. He earned five Emmy nominations and one win for his role as Christopher Moltisanti, while also contributing to the show's writing team for five episodes.
Imperioli’s creative output is remarkably broad. He co-wrote the 1999 film Summer of Sam with Spike Lee and later directed and wrote his own feature film, The Hungry Ghosts, in 2008. His commitment to the arts also manifested in the founding of Studio Dante, an Off-Broadway theater. Beyond film and stage, he is a musician who fronts the band Zopa, which released its debut album, La Dolce Vita, in 2020. His literary contributions include an oral history of The Sopranos, titled Woke Up This Morning, co-authored with Steve Schirripa.
The actor’s personal life and interests are equally eclectic. He became a Buddhist in 2008 and is a dedicated practitioner of Taekwondo. His professional journey has continued into the 2020s with a lead role in the second season of The White Lotus, which garnered another Emmy nomination, and a 2024 Broadway debut in a revival of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. Whether through his podcasting, his narration work, or his recent role as a crime boss in the 2025 series Memory of a Killer, Imperioli remains a persistent force in contemporary entertainment.
