In short: Michael Gough was a prolific British actor whose career spanned over 150 film and television roles. While he became a staple of Hammer horror cinema as a sinister villain, he is perhaps best remembered as the loyal Alfred Pennyworth in the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman film series.

Born in 1916 in Kuala Lumpur, Michael Gough began his acting journey at The Old Vic after leaving agricultural college. During World War II, he served in the Non-Combatant Corps as a conscientious objector. His professional breakthrough arrived in the late 1940s, and by 1957, he had secured a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor. His early film work included a role in Laurence Olivier's 1955 production of Richard III, where he played one of the murderers of the Princes in the Tower.

Gough's reputation for playing slimy, menacing figures was cemented through a string of horror films, including Dracula in 1958 and various shockers like Konga and Horror Hospital. However, his range extended far beyond the macabre. He was a celebrated stage actor, winning a Tony Award in 1979 for his performance in Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce. His television career was equally expansive, featuring roles in Doctor Who, The Avengers, and the acclaimed adaptation of Smiley's People.

In his later years, Gough became a global icon for his portrayal of Alfred Pennyworth, appearing in all four films of the original Batman franchise between 1989 and 1997. He was one of only two actors to appear in all four entries of that series. Though he officially retired in 1999 following Sleepy Hollow, he returned to the screen twice more to voice characters in Tim Burton's Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland. Gough passed away in 2011 at the age of 94.
