Ming Garden, 1983 | From the Vaults · 28:56 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: This archival film captures the construction of The Met's Ming-style courtyard. It remains a landmark moment in diplomatic history, marking the inaugural long-term cultural collaboration between the American government and the Chinese state.

To build this authentic space, 27 specialists traveled from Suzhou to New York. The team included 21 artisans, five engineers, and one chef. They utilized traditional techniques to recreate the aesthetic of Suzhou gardens, which have been celebrated for centuries.

The installation features characteristic elements like intricate woodwork, terracotta brickwork, and limestone formations shaped by natural erosion. This project serves as a lasting example of cross-cultural craftsmanship and historical exchange.
