The massive marine predator that was never actually a dinosaur
While Hollywood portrays them as dinosaur cousins, the Mosasaurus was a different kind of apex predator. These giant squamates ruled the Late Cretaceous oceans, using specialized, mobile skulls to consume massive prey. Yet, for decades after their discovery, scientists couldn't even agree if they were fish, whales, or crocodiles.
The story of the Mosasaurus began in the mid-eighteenth century when Dutch miners in a limestone quarry near Maastricht, Netherlands, stumbled upon fossilized teeth. This discovery eventually led to the identification of the first known specimens, though the scientific community remained deeply divided. Because the first fossils appeared in 1766—nearly 80 years before the term 'dinosaur' was even coined—the creature's identity was a subject of intense debate. Early experts proposed it might be a fish, a whale, or even a crocodile.
It was Adriaan Camper who first noted the skull's resemblance to living reptiles, a theory later supported by the renowned French naturalist Georges Cuvier. By 1822, the animal was officially named Mosasaurus, which translates to 'Meuse lizard' in honor of the river flowing through Maastricht. We now know these animals were squamates, the same group containing modern snakes and lizards. Their anatomy featured a highly mobile quadrate bone, much like a snake's, which allowed different parts of the skull to move independently to swallow large prey.
Despite our modern understanding, much of their exact lineage remains a mystery. While some researchers argue they are marine relatives of monitor lizards or snakes, the Mosasaurus was so highly specialized that current evidence is insufficient to confirm their specific place within the squamate family. Even their true scale remains contested. While some estimates suggest the species Mosasaurus hoffmannii—first classified by Gideon Mantell in 1829—could have reached 17 or 18 metres, other scientists believe a more likely length is between 11 and 12 metres.
