How an empire of gunpowder and art once held a quarter of global wealth
In short: By the late 17th century, Mughal India was not just a regional power; it was one of the richest economies on Earth. This Turkic-Mongol dynasty mastered the balance between military might and cultural integration, creating a sophisticated administrative framework that sustained its rule for over two hundred years.
The Mughal dynasty emerged in the early 16th century as a Muslim dynasty of Turkic-Mongol origin. It was defined by its ability to govern most of northern India for more than two centuries, eventually expanding across the subcontinent. A key characteristic of their rule was the deliberate attempt to integrate Hindus and Muslims into a single, united Indian state—a significant political undertaking for a Muslim dynasty governing such a diverse population.
The empire's expansion reached its peak through successive rulers who pushed frontiers southward. By the late 16th century, Akbar had extended dominion from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea. The ultimate territorial zenith occurred in the late 17th century under Aurangzeb, who conquered the Deccan sultanates. Mughal India represented a worldwide financial powerhouse throughout this period, contributing approximately 24 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP). At its height, the empire's population is estimated to have been between 100 million and 150 million.
Mughals are categorized by historians as 'gunpowder empires.' This classification, popularized in the late 20th century, refers to states that utilized firearms and centralized military power to expand territory. The Mughals combined this military technology with a highly organized administrative system. While the empire began to decline after being overrun by the Marathas in the mid-18th century, it persisted as a reduced entity until the mid-19th century, when the British finally exiled the last emperor.
