In short: Thirteenth-century Japanese prophet Nichiren argued that society’s turmoil stemmed from spiritual error. He proposed a radical solution: devotion to the Lotus Sutra through a specific chant. This practice, he claimed, could unlock the inherent Buddha-nature in every person and ultimately secure peace and prosperity for the entire world.

Nichiren emerged during the Kamakura period, an era defined by political instability and the rise of military dictatorships. Amidst this social upheaval, he became a vocal critic of existing religious institutions, which he believed had strayed from the true path. He identified himself as a bodhisattva destined to endure persecution for his message, a role he felt confirmed by the severe hardships he faced throughout his life.

Central to his philosophy were the three great secret laws, which provided a framework for practice. The first, the honzon, serves as the primary object of worship, typically featuring the name of the Lotus Sutra alongside other divinities. The second is the daimoku, a devotional chant of the phrase Namu myōhō renge kyō. The third is the kaidan, or place of ordination, which represents the sacred space where these teachings are upheld. Nichiren insisted that these practices were not merely theoretical but required active engagement with the world.

After his death in 1282, his followers diverged into various sects, including Nichiren-shū and Nichiren-shō-shū. The latter gained significant influence through its lay organization, Sōka-gakkai, which helped propel the movement into the modern political arena and facilitated its expansion globally. While some groups view Nichiren as a saint or a bodhisattva, others, such as Nichiren-shō-shū, elevate him to a status surpassing even the historical Buddha. Today, these organizations continue to debate the interpretation of his legacy, yet they remain united by the core belief that individual enlightenment and the transformation of society are inextricably linked.
