The man who waged a lifelong war against stupid books
In short: He abandoned a legal career to hunt down literary mediocrity. Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux didn't just write poetry; he rebuilt the French language through rigorous rule and biting satire, famously declaring a singular, lifelong passion: a profound hatred for bad writing.
Born in 1636, Boileau-Despréaux transitioned from studying theology at the Sorbonne to practicing law in 1656. However, he quickly abandoned the bar, repulsed by the chicanery he witnessed in the legal profession. Following his father's death in 1657, he devoted himself entirely to letters, driven by a mission to reform French versification.
His primary weapon was satire. Beginning in 1660, his works attacked the era's most prominent writers, such as Jean Chapelain and the Abbé Charles Cotin. While his prose, like the 'Dialogue sur les héros de roman', helped dismantle the popularity of elaborate romances, his true impact lay in establishing a disciplined, regular structure for French verse. He brought a new terseness and vigor to the language, heavily influenced by the classical style of Horace.
Boileau’s influence extended far beyond France. His 'L'Art poétique' (1674) provided a blueprint for poetic rules that later inspired English masters like John Dryden and Alexander Pope. Yet, his life was not without friction. His sharp tongue earned him many enemies; his '10th satire' even provoked a theological backlash, with Bishop Bossuet labeling such satire as morally subversive.
Despite the controversies and the suppression of his works by the Jesuits late in his life, Boileau remains a foundational figure. He transformed French poetry from an unmethodical craft into a disciplined art form, emphasizing 'bon sens' and the value of meticulous workmanship.
