A lightning strike turned a wealthy nobleman into a saint who reshaped medieval Europe.
In short: After a terrifying brush with death, Norbert of Xanten abandoned his privileged life to become an itinerant preacher. He founded the Premonstratensian order, balancing intense monastic contemplation with active ministry. Today, his legacy persists through a global network of educators and a remarkably preserved relic displayed in Prague.
Born around 1080, Norbert of Xanten was destined for a high-ranking ecclesiastical career as the third son of a nobleman. His life shifted dramatically following a near-fatal horse accident caused by a lightning strike. This profound conversion led him to renounce his comfortable position as a canon in Xanten, sell his possessions, and embrace a life of extreme poverty and public preaching.
Norbert’s mission focused on reforming a demoralized clergy, often living in isolation or failing to uphold their vows. In 1120, he established the Canons Regular of Prémontré in a remote French valley. He adopted the Rule of St. Augustine for his community while integrating the administrative structure of the Cistercians, creating a hybrid model that allowed his priests to maintain a contemplative, ascetic haven while engaging in active pastoral work and education.
His influence extended far beyond his abbey. As Archbishop of Magdeburg starting in 1126, he enforced strict reforms, navigated the complex Investiture Controversy, and played a decisive role in securing the papacy for Innocent II during the 1130 schism. Norbert died in 1134, and his remains were eventually moved to Prague in 1627. He is still venerated today, with his body kept in a glass case as a mummified figure, serving as a physical testament to his enduring impact on the Church.
The Premonstratensian order, also known as the White Canons, continues to operate globally, focusing on education and parish ministry. From his early days as an innovator denounced at the Council of Fritzlar to his canonization by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, Norbert remains a pivotal figure who bridged the gap between monastic withdrawal and the needs of the medieval world.
