Why the distinction between Left and Right remains the ultimate political divide
In short: Norberto Bobbio, one of the 20th century's most influential Italian intellectuals, argued that the divide between Left and Right is defined by their view of inequality. While the Left seeks to eradicate social disparities, the Right views them as natural and inevitable, often dismissing equality as a dangerous, utopian fantasy.
Born in Turin in 1909, Norberto Bobbio navigated a life defined by the turbulent shifts of the Italian Republic. Though he briefly registered with the National Fascist Party in 1928, he later joined the clandestine Partito d'Azione in 1942, enduring imprisonment under Mussolini’s regime in 1943 and 1944. These experiences shaped his lifelong commitment to the rule of law, the separation of powers, and a democratic socialism that remained fiercely critical of authoritarianism, whether from the far-right or within Marxist movements.
Bobbio’s academic career was as rigorous as his political engagement. Initially focused on the philosophy of law—influenced by Hans Kelsen—he transitioned toward political science in the 1970s. His work, including The Future of Democracy and The Age of Rights, established him as a premier theorist of democratic procedures. He famously argued that democracy is best understood not as a vague ideal, but as a specific set of rules that authorize collective decision-making, ensuring the survival of social groups without resorting to autocracy.
Beyond his theoretical contributions, Bobbio was a prominent public intellectual, writing for the Turin-based daily La Stampa and advocating for causes like nuclear disarmament. His intellectual legacy was recognized through numerous honors, including the 1994 Balzan Prize and his nomination as a Senator-for-life in 1984. Even his personal struggles with a chronic, fatiguing illness were, in his view, integral to his intellectual growth. By the time of his death in 2004, he had solidified his reputation as a vital voice for social democracy and a sharp critic of figures like Silvio Berlusconi, leaving behind a body of work that continues to frame modern debates on equality and governance.
