Oshun: The Yoruba Orisha of Love, Wealth, and the Power of Feminine Influence
In short: As the divine patroness of the Osun River, Oshun is one of the most venerated figures in the Yoruba religion. Beyond her role as a goddess of love and beauty, she represents the essential necessity of feminine influence in the creation of the world and the preservation of prosperity.
Oshun, also known as Ọṣun, Ochún, or Oxúm, is a central figure in the Yoruba religion, embodying a vast array of attributes including love, fertility, femininity, and wealth. As one of the most popular of the 401 orishas, she is deeply connected to the Osun River in Nigeria, which serves as the site of her principal sanctuary at the Oṣun-Osogbo Sacred Grove. This location hosts the annual two-week-long Oṣun-Osogbo Festival, typically held in August, honoring her legacy and divine presence.
The Ifa Literary Corpus offers distinct perspectives on her role in the creation of the world. One narrative suggests that Oshun was the sole female Irunmole, or primordial spirit, sent by the Supreme God Olodumare to assist Shango. While some accounts claim that male spirits initially attempted to build the world without female influence—leading to failure—others suggest that female spirits struggled when acting without male leadership. Regardless of the version, these myths conclude with Shango mandating that the other spirits respect Oshun, eventually leading to her deification by Olodumare.
Oshun's influence extends far beyond Nigeria, having been adopted into various Afro-Brazilian and Caribbean traditions. In Candomblé Ketu, she is revered as the patron of gestation and protector of small children, often called 'Mamãe' by her devotees. In Santería, she is syncretized with Our Lady of Charity. Often associated with gold—which once referred to copper—she is also known as the 'Lady of Gold' and is frequently identified by weeping, a symbol of her profound sensitivity. Whether through the musical ceremonies known as violín or her association with specific aromatic, yellow-hued plants, Oshun remains a vital symbol of both spiritual and material prosperity.
