The Battleship That Survived Pearl Harbor Only to Face an Atomic Bomb

Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire: The Extraordinary Saga of the Unsinkable Nevada · 37:54 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: The USS Nevada was a revolutionary battleship that witnessed the rise of the aircraft carrier at Pearl Harbor and the dawn of the atomic age at Bikini Atoll. This video recounts the extraordinary career of a vessel that served through the most transformative era in naval history.

Commissioned in 1916, the USS Nevada became a central figure in naval warfare. By December 7, 1941, the ship was present at Pearl Harbor, where the Japanese attack signaled the end of the battleship's dominance. Her career concluded in 1946 during Operation Crossroads, a series of nuclear experiments conducted at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

During the Able test on July 1, 1946, the Nevada was painted bright orange to serve as the aiming point for a B-29 Superfortress named Dave’s Dream. The ship stood at the center of a fleet that included the Japanese battleship Nagato and the German cruiser Prinz Eugen, marking a final, historic transition into the atomic era.
