In short: In 1946, the USS Pennsylvania was tasked with witnessing the dawn of the atomic age. She survived the physical shock of two nuclear blasts at Bikini Atoll, but the invisible consequences of the second test proved fatal. Her journey from a super-dreadnought to a radioactive relic is a study in the evolution of naval power.

Launched in March 1915, the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) was a 'super-dreadnought' designed to push the boundaries of naval engineering. As the lead ship of her class, she was significantly larger than her predecessors, measuring 608 feet in length and displacing over 29,000 long tons at standard weight. She was a pioneer of the 'all-or-nothing' armor principle, which concentrated heavy Krupp armor—up to 18 inches thick on the turret faces—around the ship's most vital machinery and magazines, while leaving less critical areas thinner to save weight.

The ship's operational history was defined by its transition from coal to oil. Because she was oil-fired, she was notably absent from European waters during World War I, as fuel oil was less accessible than coal at the time. Instead, she served as a high-profile flagship for the Atlantic Fleet, hosting figures like Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Woodrow Wilson. During World War II, she shifted to the Pacific, providing heavy gunfire support during the Aleutian Islands Campaign and the liberation of the Marshall and Mariana Islands.

The battleship's end came not from a conventional naval engagement, but from the experiments of the Cold War. In 1946, she was repaired just enough to reach Bikini Atoll for Operation Crossroads. While she withstood the initial explosions of the nuclear tests, she became severely contaminated with radioactive fallout from the second blast. Following eighteen months of observation regarding its impact, the vessel was declared unusable and sunk in the ocean near the atoll during February 1948.
