In short: Dr. David Hurst Thomas is redefining how we understand the intersection of Native American and anthropological communities. This profile explores his career, from locating lost colonial missions to discovering some of the continent's deepest archaeological sites.

Over a three-decade career, Dr. Thomas has led more than 100 excavations across the United States. He notably utilized remote sensing technology to locate the long-lost Franciscan mission St. Catalina de Guale on Georgia's coast, which operated between 1566 and 1680. His team spent twelve years excavating that site before moving to study a Spanish Mission near Santa Fe.

Beyond colonial history, Thomas is recognized for his work in Nevada, where he identified the Gatecliff Shelter. This location holds the distinction of being the deepest archaeological rock shelter found in the Americas.
