In short: Deep within a modern stone quarry in Marion County, archaeologists uncovered evidence of human habitation that predates all other documented sites on the mainland. These ancient tools push back our understanding of early American history by thousands of years.

In 1976, an archaeological investigation at an ancient stone quarry located on a Container Corporation of America site yielded "crude stone implements" and thousands of pieces of chert. Thermoluminescence dating and weathering analysis independently dated these artifacts to between 26,000 and 28,000 Years Before Present (YBP). This timeline significantly predates the Clovis points typically associated with early human migration into the Americas.

The findings were so substantial that they suggested human habitation in this region occurred much earlier than previous evidence had documented. Researchers like Barbara Purdy have since provided additional bipoint evidence from the site to support these pre-Clovis dates, reinforcing the county's status as a primary site for understanding ancient indigenous cultures.

Beyond its prehistoric roots, Marion County has served as a crossroads of history. Its county seat, Ocala, was named after a Timucuan village recorded by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Throughout the 1800s, this territory evolved into a centre for secessionist movements, defined by an agrarian system where over 50% of residents were enslaved African Americans.

In the modern era, the county transformed into a global hub for thoroughbred horse racing. Starting in 1943, engineer Carl G. Rose identified the area's limestone as ideal for pasture, leading to the development of the first thoroughbred farm in the state. Today, Ocala is recognized as a "horse capital of the world," home to over 1,200 horse farms.
