How three presidents reshaped America through reform and intervention

In short: The Progressive Era was defined by Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. They dismantled industrial trusts, established national parks, and launched social programs. Yet, their legacy is complex, marked by frequent military interventions in Latin America and a political split that redefined the American presidency.

The Progressive Era was driven by a growing public demand for federal intervention to solve problems that had become too large for individual states to manage. By 1901, a massive reform upheaval was underway. The assassination of President William McKinley in September 1901 shifted the trajectory of the nation, bringing Theodore Roosevelt to the White House. At age 42, Roosevelt became the youngest man to enter the office, bringing a deep understanding of urban issues from his time as New York's police commissioner and governor.

Roosevelt transformed the presidency into a powerful political force, famously referring to the White House as a "bully pulpit." He sought to address the rise of industrial trusts—large combinations that Americans feared were driving up prices since 1897. To do this, he activated the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, a law that had previously sat dormant due to the reluctance of previous presidents and a 1895 Supreme Court ruling that limited its scope regarding manufacturing combinations.

The era's impact extended far beyond domestic policy. While Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson enacted significant social reforms and lowered tariffs, their tenures were also characterized by intense international involvement. This included the Roosevelt Corollary and Taft's "Dollar Diplomacy," alongside frequent military invasions in Latin America. The era eventually concluded as the United States became embroiled in World War I, marking a transition from domestic reform to global conflict.
