In short: Robert Lawrence Stine, the prolific mind behind the Goosebumps phenomenon, has sold over 400 million books worldwide. Despite his massive success as a horror icon, he famously refuses to learn proper typing, preferring to hunt and peck with a single index finger that has become permanently curved from the effort.

Born in 1943 in Columbus, Ohio, Stine discovered his passion for storytelling at age nine after finding a typewriter in his attic. He credits his early fascination with Tales from the Crypt comic books as a primary influence on his future career. After graduating from Ohio State University in 1965, he moved to New York City to pursue writing, initially finding success as a humorist under the alias Jovial Bob Stine, where he edited the magazine Bananas for nearly a decade.

Stine’s transition into horror began in 1986 with his novel Blind Date. By 1989, he launched the Fear Street series, followed in 1992 by the debut of Goosebumps. The latter became a global sensation, eventually earning him the title of the most successful children's book series author in history according to the Guinness Book of World Records. His work has transcended the page, spawning numerous television series, video games, and feature films, including a Netflix trilogy based on Fear Street.

Beyond his horror output, Stine has explored adult fiction and various multimedia projects, including the Nickelodeon series Eureeka's Castle. His dedication to his craft is singular; he maintains that learning to touch-type would only hinder his speed. This unconventional method has resulted in a prolific output that spans decades, earning him accolades such as the Horror Writers Association's Lifetime Achievement Award and the Bram Stoker Award. Even today, he continues to produce new horror fiction, proving his enduring influence on generations of readers.
