From Olympic hostess to Swedish Queen: The multilingual life of Silvia Renate Sommerlath
In short: Born in Germany and raised in Brazil, Queen Silvia of Sweden became the first commoner to marry a reigning Swedish monarch in nearly two centuries. Beyond her royal duties, she is a polyglot who speaks six languages, a dedicated advocate for children, and a patron of dementia care research.
Born in 1943 in Heidelberg, Silvia Renate Sommerlath spent her formative years in Brazil before returning to Germany. Her path to the Swedish throne began at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, where she worked as a hostess. There, she met Crown Prince Carl Gustaf. Their marriage in 1976 was a historic event, marking the first time a reigning Swedish monarch had wed since 1797. The wedding festivities famously included the debut performance of ABBA's 'Dancing Queen,' written as a tribute to the future queen.
Silvia's life has not been without controversy. In 2002, reports surfaced alleging that her father, Walther Sommerlath, had joined the Nazi party's foreign wing while working in Brazil in 1934. The Queen later commissioned a report from historian Erik Norberg, which suggested her father had actually helped a Jewish business owner escape Germany by taking over his factory. Silvia has publicly described the media scrutiny surrounding this period as character assassination.
Beyond the palace, the Queen has built a significant legacy in humanitarian work. She co-founded the World Childhood Foundation in 1999 and established Mentor International in 1994 to support youth development. Her commitment to healthcare is equally prominent; she founded Silviahemmet in Stockholm to advance dementia education and research. Additionally, she supports various causes, including athletics for disabled youth and children's cancer research, reflecting a life defined by public service and global engagement.
