AI writing tools can improve engagement and self-efficacy for postgraduate students
In short: Researchers who conducted a randomized controlled trial with 120 postgraduate students found that using an AI-powered writing assistant significantly boosted several key learning metrics. Compared to students without the tool, those using the AI assistant showed marked improvements in behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement, as well as higher levels of writing self-efficacy and positive emotions.
The study investigated how an AI writing tool affects the learning behaviors and attitudes of non-native English postgraduate students. By comparing a group using the tool against a group without it, researchers observed significant shifts in how students engaged with their academic writing tasks.
The study used a randomized controlled trial design, which is a strong method for observing effects, though the specific context of English academic writing for non-native speakers may limit how broadly these results apply to all learners.
Why it matters: AI tools may help non-native students engage more deeply with academic writing and feel more confident.
