The seventeenth-century courtier who traded a military career for a life of scandalous satire
In short: Roger de Rabutin, comte de Bussy, was a man of two warring ambitions: to be a distinguished soldier and an honnête homme. Instead, his vanity and penchant for writing biting, libelous accounts of court life led to his disgrace, exile, and a permanent place in the annals of French literature.
Born in 1618, Bussy-Rabutin was a French nobleman who entered military service at sixteen. His career was marked by shifting loyalties during the Fronde and a volatile temperament that alienated his peers. Despite serving in significant conflicts like the 1658 Battle of the Dunes, his reputation suffered from his habit of composing malicious songs and his involvement in public scandals, most notably an infamous orgy during Holy Week in 1659.
His downfall was cemented by his 1660 work, Histoire amoureuse des Gaules. Written to entertain his mistress, the book featured witty but cruel portraits of prominent court figures, including members of the royal family. While Bussy claimed the manuscript was stolen and altered by a former associate, Madame de la Baume, the damage was irreversible. In 1665, he was imprisoned in the Bastille for over a year and subsequently banished to his estates in Burgundy for twenty-seven years.
Exile transformed Bussy from a courtier into a prolific writer. He maintained a massive, historically significant correspondence with his cousin, Madame de Sévigné, and produced memoirs that blended narrative with historical romance. Although he was elected to the Académie française in 1665, he spent the remainder of his life largely removed from the center of power, dying in 1693. His legacy persists not through his military achievements, but through his sharp, classical prose and his role as a chronicler of the intrigues of his age.
