In short: Before he became a household name, Roger Hargreaves was a creative director crafting slogans for dry cleaners and soda. In 1971, a simple question from his son sparked the creation of Mr. Tickle, launching a literary phenomenon that has since sold over 85 million books across the globe.

Born in 1935 in West Yorkshire, Roger Hargreaves initially pursued a career in advertising. By 1968, he served as creative director at the Foote, Cone & Belding agency, where he penned memorable slogans for brands like Canada Dry. Despite his professional success, his true ambition lay in cartooning. This desire manifested in 1971 through The Miseries, a series of characters designed for television commercials, which remained in use until 1994.

The turning point arrived in 1971 when Hargreaves wrote the first Mr. Men book, Mr. Tickle. Although he faced early rejection from publishers, the books achieved immediate popularity, selling over one million copies within three years. This success allowed Hargreaves to transition away from his advertising career by 1976. He eventually produced 46 Mr. Men books and 33 Little Miss titles, alongside other works like the 25-book Timbuctoo series.

Hargreaves' influence extended well beyond the printed page. His characters were adapted into BBC animated series in the 1970s and 1980s, narrated by figures such as Arthur Lowe and Pauline Collins. Following his death in 1988 at age 53, his son Adam continued the legacy by writing and illustrating new stories. The brand's commercial journey continued long after, with the rights sold to Chorion for £28 million in 2004 and later acquired by the Japanese company Sanrio in 2011.

Today, the legacy of these brightly colored, simple stories remains deeply embedded in popular culture. In 2011, Google honored what would have been his 76th birthday with a series of 16 homepage doodles, and in 2021, he was posthumously awarded a gold Blue Peter badge. His work stands as a testament to the enduring power of minimalist storytelling, which has reached readers in 20 different languages.
