How a side project for an advertising executive became a global phenomenon
In short: What began as a series of doodles for an advertising campaign evolved into a massive media empire. From a single orange character inspired by a child's question to over 250 million books sold, the Mr. Men and Little Miss series has captured the imagination of children across 28 countries.
The Mr. Men series was born from the creative side projects of English author and illustrator Roger Hargreaves. While working in advertising, Hargreaves created commercials for Askit Powders titled 'Askit Fights the Miseries,' characters that many see as the precursors to his famous book series. His first successful character, Mr. Tickle, was inspired by a question from his son, Adam, regarding what a tickle looks like. This resulted in a round, orange figure with long, bendy arms, marking the start of a series that first saw publication on 10 August 1971.
The franchise's success is rooted in its simple formula: each book introduces a character defined by a single, dominant personality trait to teach a moral lesson. This simplicity has translated into immense commercial scale, with over 250 million copies sold worldwide. In 1981, Hargreaves expanded the universe with the Little Miss series, created specifically to appeal to his twin daughters. By 2021, the franchise had grown to include 92 different Mr. Men and Little Miss characters.
The legacy continues through Adam Hargreaves, who took over writing and illustrating the series in 2003, fifteen years after his father's death in 1988. While Adam's work is new, he maintains the brand's continuity by keeping his father's name on the covers. The franchise has also seen significant corporate shifts, such as the 2011 acquisition of the rights by the Japanese design company Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty, following the administration of the previous rights holder, Chorion.
