The unemployment crisis facing Thailand's captive elephant population

Science Bulletins: Wild at Heart—The Plight of Elephants in Thailand · 7:05 · Video: American Museum of Natural History · Watch at the source

In short: Once essential to the economy, elephants in Thailand are facing a crisis of obsolescence. This video explores the scientific effort to transition these animals from human labor back to their natural roles in the wild.

Since the 1989 ban on logging in Thailand, the captive elephant has lost its primary role as a beast of burden. While they remain culturally revered, their traditional utility has vanished, leaving thousands of animals without a clear purpose in human society.

Because these elephants have never been selectively bred, they retain their wild genetic makeup. Scientists are now working to reintroduce them into forests, focusing on reestablishing natural herd structures to return them to a life of wild autonomy.
