In short: Starting in a single apartment in 1931, the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) evolved from a modest Nazi Party intelligence unit into a sprawling, lethal bureaucracy. By systematically infiltrating German society and orchestrating the Final Solution, the SD transformed from a political watchdog into the primary engine of the Third Reich's most heinous crimes.

Established in 1931 by Heinrich Himmler and organized by Reinhard Heydrich, the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) began as a small intelligence service, the Ic-Dienst. Initially operating from a single apartment, it served as a watchdog over the Nazi Party and the SS. Following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the SD rapidly expanded its influence, consolidating police powers and creating extensive card-indexes of political opponents. By 1934, it was designated the sole party information service, and its role in the Night of the Long Knives solidified its position as a central pillar of the regime, responsible only to the Führer.

The SD’s structure was designed for total surveillance. In 1939, it was integrated into the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) as two distinct departments: Amt III for internal intelligence and Amt VI for foreign operations. Under leaders like Otto Ohlendorf and Walter Schellenberg, the agency monitored the 'political health' of the German population, using reports like Meldungen aus dem Reich to manipulate public morale. Beyond domestic control, the SD engaged in international subversion, orchestrating the annexation of Austria and the invasion of Czechoslovakia through clandestine operations, propaganda, and terror.

The agency’s most infamous legacy lies in its role as the parent organization of the Einsatzgruppen. These mobile killing units, composed of personnel from the SD, Gestapo, and other SS branches, were tasked with the systematic murder of Jews, communists, and perceived enemies across occupied territories. Heydrich, who chaired the 1942 Wannsee Conference, utilized the SD to implement the Final Solution, with departments like the one led by Adolf Eichmann bureaucratizing genocide. Following Germany's defeat, the Nuremberg tribunal declared the SD a criminal organization, and its leaders, including Ernst Kaltenbrunner, were convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
