Solomon's name means peace, chosen after a scandal in David's court
Jews, Christians and Muslims all honour Solomon as a wise king and a prophet, and later legend even made him a magician. Yet historians doubt the lavish empire the Bible describes. His very name, meaning peaceful, was tied to his father David's affair with Bathsheba and its aftermath.
According to the Hebrew Bible, Solomon, also called Jedidiah, succeeded David as king of a united Israel and Judah, the next-to-last ruler of all twelve tribes. Conventional chronology, largely following Old Testament scholar Edwin R. Thiele, puts his reign at about 970 to 931 BCE, with his death and the kingdom's division in autumn 931. The Davidic line can be cross-checked at a few points against dated Babylonian and Assyrian records.
His birth story is dark. David had Uriah the Hittite sent to the front line and ordered Joab to pull back support so Uriah would be killed, freeing David to marry his widow Bathsheba. Their first son died seven days after birth, read in the text as divine judgment. Solomon, born after David's forgiveness, was the second child, which the narrative links to his name. Some historians note that the prophet Nathan helped raise him.
The Bible credits him with commercial prosperity through trade and alliances, and tradition names him author of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs; the Temple in Jerusalem carries his name. But the same account blames his hoard of wealth, horses and foreign wives, some bringing idols, for divine punishment. After his death, Rehoboam's harshness drove the north to follow Jeroboam, splitting the realm into Israel and Judah.
Most scholars accept he may have existed but consider the Bible's picture of imperial splendour a likely exaggeration written later. His afterlife in religion is rich. The New Testament presents him as a wisdom teacher compared with Jesus, the Quran counts him among the major prophets, and in the Hellenistic era he gained fame as an exorcist whose name appeared on amulets and seals. A 2023 textbook offered three possible meanings for the name, including one linked to Shalim, a deified evening star.
