In short: Born in British India just before the 1947 partition, Suresh Oberoi transitioned from a pharmacy owner and champion athlete to a celebrated Bollywood actor. Beyond his 135 film credits and National Film Award, he has carved out a distinct path as a spiritual writer and an ambassador for global mental health.

Born on 17 December 1946 in Quetta, Suresh Oberoi experienced early upheaval when his family relocated to India following the 1947 partition. Settling in Hyderabad, the family established a chain of medical stores, which Oberoi managed alongside his brother after his father passed away shortly after high school. Before his ascent in the film industry, he was a dedicated athlete, excelling in tennis and swimming, and earning the President's Award as a Boy Scout.

Oberoi's career in entertainment began in radio and modeling before he became a fixture in Hindi cinema throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His performance in 1987 earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. His artistic reach extended to music, where he recited couplets for the 1990 film Yaadon Ka Mausam, and television, with roles in shows like Dhadkan and Kashmeer. In 2019, his contributions to culture were recognized with the Champions of Change Award, presented by Shri Pranab Mukherjee in 2020.

His personal life and spiritual outlook are deeply rooted in his upbringing. Raised by an Arya Samaj father and a Nanakpanthi mother, Oberoi maintains a strong religious identity, which he explores in his book, Pilgrim of Life. He also writes romantic and philosophical poetry. Today, his influence extends into advocacy; he serves as an ambassador for the World Psychiatric Association alongside Sister Shivani Verma of the Brahma Kumaris, bridging the gap between his public persona as an actor and his private commitment to philosophical inquiry and mental health awareness.
