From engineering student to Bollywood star: The unconventional rise of Kartik Aaryan
In short: Kartik Aaryan began his career by secretly auditioning for roles while studying biotechnology in Mumbai. Living in a shared apartment with twelve other aspiring actors, he eventually broke through with a viral monologue. Today, he stands as one of India's most recognizable leading men and a major box-office draw.
Born Kartik Tiwari in Gwalior in 1990, Aaryan initially pursued a degree in biotechnology engineering at D.Y. Patil University. While his parents, both doctors, expected a different path, he spent his university years secretly attending auditions. His persistence paid off when he secured his debut in the 2011 buddy film Pyaar Ka Punchnama. To survive during these early years, he lived in cramped quarters with over a dozen other hopefuls, earning his keep by cooking for them.
Aaryan’s early career was defined by his association with director Luv Ranjan, particularly through a series of comedies that became known for their lengthy, rapid-fire monologues. While these films, such as the 2015 sequel Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, were financial successes, they also drew criticism for their portrayal of gender dynamics. Aaryan has frequently defended his work, arguing that playing flawed characters does not equate to endorsing their negative traits, and he has since sought to diversify his filmography.
In recent years, Aaryan has moved toward more challenging, against-type roles. His performance as Murlikant Petkar in the 2024 biopic Chandu Champion earned him both a National Film Award and a Filmfare Award for Best Actor, marking a significant critical milestone. This shift followed his massive commercial success with the Bhool Bhulaiyaa horror-comedy franchise, which cemented his status as a bankable star. Beyond the screen, he is a prominent brand endorser and philanthropist, notably contributing to India's COVID-19 relief efforts and flood rehabilitation in Assam.
Despite his fame, Aaryan maintains a guarded approach to his personal life, refusing to discuss his relationships in the media. His career trajectory—from a student skipping classes to a recipient of the highest honors in Indian cinema—reflects a deliberate evolution from the 'lover boy' archetype to a versatile performer capable of handling both lighthearted comedy and intense, physically demanding biographical dramas.
