What happens when everyday design fails to meet our needs?
In short: When official instructions or signage fall short, humans instinctively step in. Designer Kate Canales explores the improvised, handmade solutions we create to bridge the gap between flawed design and practical necessity.
Drawing on over 20 years of photography, Canales examines the makeshift signs that emerge when technology or physical objects fail us—from confusing bathroom directions to difficulties with doors and point-of-sale machines. These improvised markers reveal a uniquely human instinct to provide instructions and look out for one another, capturing a level of care that formal design often misses.
