Was the Battle of Stalingrad a lost cause for Germany before it even began?

The Battle of Stalingrad was doomed from the start, and here's why · 17:09 · Video: Imperial War Museums · Watch at the source

In short: The Battle of Stalingrad is often cited as the turning point of the Second World War, but its outcome may have been sealed long before the fighting started. By late 1941, Germany faced a critical shortage of resources, a two-front war, and the entry of the United States into the conflict.

The seeds of Germany's failure in the East were sown in 1941. After invading the Soviet Union in June, German leadership expected a swift victory within six weeks. However, by December, the Red Army had successfully pushed back German forces during a winter counter-offensive. This failure was compounded by a severe logistical crisis: Germany had previously relied on the Soviet Union for essential raw materials, a supply chain that vanished the moment hostilities commenced.

The strategic situation deteriorated further in December 1941 when the United States entered the war. Hitler had long feared a two-front conflict, particularly against American industrial capacity. With his window of opportunity closing, Hitler identified the oilfields of the southern Caucasus as the absolute requirement for victory. The campaign to secure these resources led directly to the Battle of Stalingrad, which became the bloodiest engagement of the war.

While Stalingrad is frequently viewed as the decisive turning point, the structural weaknesses of the German war machine suggest the outcome was predetermined. The invasion of the Soviet Union, known as Operation Barbarossa, was already hampered by a five-week delay caused by military campaigns in the Balkans. This postponement, combined with a lack of resources and the emergence of a global coalition against the Axis powers, meant that by the time German forces reached the city, the strategic initiative had already slipped from their grasp.
