The Syrian brown bear who rose through the ranks of the Polish army

In short: During World War II, a Syrian brown bear cub was traded for a Swiss Army knife and chocolate. Named Wojtek, this bear didn't just live among soldiers; he became a corporal, a morale booster, and a defender of the camp, eventually joining the campaign in Italy.

The odyssey of Wojtek commenced close to Hamadan, Iran, after a youthful shepherd swapped a Syrian brown bear cub, contained within a burlap sack, for the 22nd Artillery Supply Company's men. In exchange, the soldiers provided a Swiss Army knife, canned beef, and chocolate. The cub, whose mother had likely been killed by hunters, was adopted by the Polish soldiers and cared for by Peter Prendys.

The bear's diet was as unconventional as his lifestyle. He was fed honey, fruit, marmalade, and even condensed milk from an empty vodka bottle. As he grew, he shared in the soldiers' leisure, engaging in wrestling and boxing, riding in the back of trucks, and enjoying long cold showers—a habit so frequent it eventually led to water shortages and a ban on his solo showering.

Wojtek's military career was marked by both ceremony and utility. Initially given the rank of private, he eventually rose to the rank of corporal. He was trained to salute, wave, and march, and he even participated in grenade practice by chasing oranges lobbed by soldiers. He once inadvertently protected the camp by encountering an Arab interloper seeking the weapons arsenal, an act that earned him unlimited shower time and two bottles of beer.

By 1944, the 22nd Artillery Supply Company prepared to ship out for the Allied military campaign in Italy, facing the complexities of rigid military rules. Wojtek had become a true member of the unit, serving primarily as a vital morale booster for the men of the II Corps of the Polish army.
