The secret, unfinished tragedy of Jerry Lewis's most controversial film
In short: For decades, Jerry Lewis guarded a secret: a haunting, unfinished drama about a clown in a Nazi concentration camp. This video explores the mystique of 'The Day the Clown Cried' and the journey of its long-hidden footage.
Directed and funded by Jerry Lewis, 'The Day the Clown Cried' follows Helmut Doork, a washed-up circus performer who is imprisoned in a Nazi camp after mocking Adolf Hitler. Despite Lewis's repeated insistence that the film would never be released, an incomplete copy was donated to the Library of Congress in 2015 with a release embargo until June 2024.
While the Library's five hours of footage were confirmed as fragmentary in August 2024, a potential breakthrough occurred in May 2025. Actor Hans Crispin revealed he possessed a complete workprint consisting of eight Swedish acts and an opening French act, which he reportedly sold for a modest sum in June 2025.
