The Hollywood sign was never intended to be a global icon
In short: Today, it is a worldwide symbol of cinematic prestige. But in 1923, this massive landmark was merely a flashing real estate advertisement. Before it became the legendary Hollywood, it was a much longer, more commercialized name, lit by thousands of bulbs to sell upscale suburban living.
The landmark we recognize today as 'Hollywood' began its life as 'Hollywoodland.' Installed in 1923 on Mount Lee in the Santa Monica Mountains, the sign was not a tribute to the film industry, but a massive billboard for an upscale housing development. Rather than the static white letters seen now, the original installation featured approximately 4,000 20-watt light bulbs designed to flash a sequence of words: 'HOLLY,' then 'WOOD,' then 'LAND,' and finally the full 'HOLLYWOODLAND.'
The history of the structure is far more turbulent than its clean, refurbished appearance suggests. While it now celebrates the heart of filmmaking, the sign has endured periods of significant decay. By the 1960s, the Hollywood Sign Trust noted it had become a 'glaring badge of certainly dishonor,' characterized by rust and dilapidation that threatened to crumble under its own weight. The site has also been marked by tragedy, including a suicide in 1932.
The broader context of the area is equally complex. The community of Hollywood was established in 1887 by developer Harvey Henderson Wilcox and expanded by H.J. Whitley, known as the 'Father of Hollywood.' The film industry's rise in the region was driven by a favorable climate and a strategic distance from East Coast legal pressures, such as Thomas Edison's patent infringement lawsuits. Today, cultural historians like Leo Braudy view the sign as a 'showbiz illusion'—a two-dimensional symbol that allows viewers to project their own meanings of fame and prestige.
