How the universe's first three minutes shaped everything we know

The First Three Minutes of Creation - Professor Joseph Silk FRS · 57:18 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: Before the Earth or even its atoms existed, the universe emerged from virtually nothing. In just three minutes, the fundamental building blocks of matter were forged, setting the stage for every galaxy, star, and person. This cosmic origin story relies on quantum fluctuations and a massive inflation of space.

The universe began from a state of virtually nothing, containing only empty space and time. Through quantum fluctuations, it underwent a period of enormous inflation, achieving a massive size, homogeneity, and isotropy. This means that, when smoothed over the scale of galaxies, the universe appears relatively uniform and looks the same in all directions. During this rapid expansion, the universe also developed the essential seeds that would eventually grow into all cosmic structures.

The matter that constitutes the Earth and ourselves—known as baryons—was created within the first three minutes of this process. This era was so transformative that it produced the very essence of life as we know it. To understand this, cosmologists act as cosmic archaeologists, using both direct methods, like modern telescopes, and indirect methods, such as searching for local fossils to probe the deep past.

The path to understanding these origins was not without conflict. Early measurements of the recession of galaxies by Hubble created an existential crisis for cosmologists because the inferred age of the universe was too short. Some scientists, including Georges Lemaître, proposed a cosmological constant to extend the universe's age, while others, including Hubble, initially doubted the expansion entirely, suggesting theories like "tired light." The crisis was only resolved when Walter Baade, observing from Mount Wilson during the World War II era, discovered two distinct types of Cepheid variable stars. His research demonstrated that measurements of distances to proximate galaxies were off by a factor of two, which corrected the Hubble constant to align with the universe's age.
