The universe spent its first twenty minutes forging the building blocks of matter

How Did the First Atom Form? Where did it come from? | Big Bang Nucleosynthesis · 16:46 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Before stars existed, the universe was a searing, dense furnace. In a frantic window of just twenty minutes, extreme heat and pressure fused the first nuclei, creating the chemical blueprint for every atom in your body today. This process, known as Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, turned raw energy into matter.

To understand how atoms formed, we must look back to the first fractions of a second. At the Planck time (10^-43 seconds), our current theories of physics reach their limit. Shortly after, the universe underwent 'inflation,' expanding faster than light. As it expanded, it cooled. At 10^-11 seconds, the temperature hit one quadrillion Kelvin, causing the Higgs field to grant mass to fundamental particles. This transitioned the universe from a quark-gluon plasma into a 'hadron gas' of protons and neutrons by 10^-5 seconds.

A critical mystery of our existence is why matter exists at all. During the early universe, matter and antimatter annihilated each other, creating photons and neutrinos. However, for reasons scientists are still investigating, slightly more matter survived this destruction. These leftover protons and neutrons became the raw ingredients for the first nuclei. Because neutrons are heavier than protons, they naturally decayed into protons with a half-life of about 15 minutes, ensuring the universe would be dominated by hydrogen.

The actual 'cooking' of elements began about one minute after the Big Bang, once temperatures dropped below 1 billion Kelvin. This period, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), lasted until the universe was about 20 minutes old. During this window, the heat was low enough for protons and neutrons to bind together without immediately flying apart. This resulted in a universe composed of roughly 75% Hydrogen and 25% Helium-4, along with trace amounts of deuterium, Helium-3, and Lithium-9. This chemical distribution set the stage for all subsequent stellar evolution.
