In short: In 1986, highway workers in Venezuela discovered a mysterious smudge on the road. This video investigates the origins and the deadly expansion of La Mancha Negra.

First spotted by workers resurfacing a road between Caracas and its airport, the substance known as La Mancha Negra—or 'black stain'—initially measured about 50 yards (46 meters) in length. Over time, the slippery goo expanded to cover an 8 mile (13 km) stretch of highway.

The phenomenon carries a heavy toll; by 1991, reports indicated that the substance was linked to over 1,800 deaths and numerous injuries.
