Can fusion energy solve our climate crisis and power the 21st century?

The need for fusion - with the UK Atomic Energy Authority · 56:38 · Video: The Royal Institution · Watch at the source

In short: Fusion energy promises a transformative shift in how we power the world, but the path to commercial viability is paved with immense engineering and physics hurdles. Experts from the UK Atomic Energy Authority and beyond are now racing to integrate complex plasma systems into a sustainable, global energy market.

The pursuit of fusion energy represents one of the most significant scientific challenges of the 21st century. On 21 October 2023, the Royal Institution hosted a lecture in collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) to examine the scientific underpinnings and market positioning of this technology. The discourse brought together diverse expertise, ranging from the climate science of Mark Maslin to the plasma physics research of Dennis Whyte from MIT.

At the heart of the engineering challenge is the design of systems that can withstand the extreme conditions near the plasma. Jenny Cane, the Technical Lead for the STEP In-Vessel Components at UKAEA, oversees the development of critical elements including the blanket, first wall, and vacuum vessel. Her work builds on a career that transitioned from aerodynamics and heat transfer in ramjet engines to renewable energy, including seven years at the wind turbine manufacturer Vestas and subsequent roles in thermo-hydraulics for the JET programme.

The broader strategy for fusion involves not just scientific discovery but also commercialization. Tim Bestwick, the Chief Development Officer and Deputy CEO at UKAEA, emphasizes the importance of innovation and the growth of technology start-ups. Bestwick, who was awarded an OBE in 2023 for his contributions to the commercialization of science, brings experience from corporate research at IBM and Sharp. His focus reflects the necessity of bridging the gap between big science programmes and practical, market-ready energy solutions.

The urgency of this work is underscored by the ongoing climate crisis. Mark Maslin, a Professor of Earth System Science and a leading voice on climate change, highlights the major challenges humanity faces this century. As fusion development continues, the integration of materials research, plasma control, and commercial strategy remains essential to determining whether fusion can effectively contribute to a net-zero future.
