The modern invention of a shared religious lineage
In short: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are often grouped as Abrahamic religions to signal fraternity. But is this common ancestor a historical reality or a modern theological construction? Exploring the roots of these faiths reveals how one man's legacy was woven into three distinct paths of monotheism.
The term 'Abrahamic religions' is a relatively modern classification used primarily in interfaith dialogue to emphasize common ground between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While it highlights their shared reverence for the biblical figure Abraham, some scholars argue the category is a political and theological invention. Critics suggest that grouping these faiths can obscure significant historical differences and unique doctrinal nuances that have defined them for centuries.
At the heart of this connection is the concept of monotheism—the belief in a single God. Abraham is traditionally regarded as one of the first monotheists, known for his devotion to God's instructions and his role in establishing a 'covenant.' In this sacred agreement, God promised him land and innumerable descendants. This covenant remains a central pillar of significance across all three major traditions, even as they interpret its specific details differently.
The lineage of these faiths diverges through Abraham’s children. Jews trace their ancestry to his son Isaac, while Christians similarly trace the lineage of Jesus through Isaac. In contrast, Muslims trace their lineage to Abraham's firstborn, Ishmael, whom Abraham was said to have banished with his mother Hagar after Sarah gave birth to Isaac. These divergent lineages illustrate how a single patriarch's life provided the foundational narrative for three distinct religious identities.
Beyond these core narratives, the figure of Abraham has been expanded over time. In noncanonical Jewish texts written between the 2nd century BCE and the 1st century CE, he was depicted as an anti-polytheistic iconoclast. Today, while they share common prophets and texts, the three religions follow unique paths shaped by specific historical contexts, rituals, and theological evolutions.
