In short: The Greco-Persian Wars were a series of conflicts spanning nearly half a century. While the Persian Empire was at the height of its power, a collective Greek defense managed to overcome massive odds, even liberating city-states on the edge of the empire. But did this win actually shape the modern world?

Between 492 and 449 BCE, the Greek states engaged in a series of wars against the Persian Empire. The most intense fighting occurred during two specific Persian invasions of mainland Greece, which took place between 490 and 479 BCE. At the time, the Persian Empire was at its peak of strength, having been expanded significantly by leaders like Darius I, who reigned from 522 to 486 BCE. Under his rule, the empire utilized a vast network of royal roads connecting roughly 20 provinces, known as satrapies, which were governed by local satraps with full civil and military authority.

The Persian military was a diverse force consisting of archers, light infantry known as sparabra, Median and Persian cavalry, and elite troops from subject peoples. Their navy included ships from Phoenicia, Cyprus, Egypt, and Greek states in Asia Minor. While the Persians generally allowed conquered peoples to maintain their own religions and internal affairs in exchange for tribute and military service, disobedience was met with harsh punishments like deportation or massacre. This imperial structure stood in stark contrast to the Greek city-states.

The outcome of these wars remains a subject of historical debate. Although some contend that the Greek victory preserved their political systems and culture well beyond the Persian Empire's fall, others dispute the idea that Greek society alone birthed modern Western civilisation. The conflict was not merely a clash of armies, but a clash between a massive, centralized empire and a collection of Greek states, including the mainland power of Sparta, which initially responded to Persian expansion with only diplomatic protests.
